Hagen Hammons, Designer

As a child growing up, unlike other kids, I would spend hours upon hours building functional “cities in the sand” and on throughout life when noticing more progressive cities that had bicycle infrastructure, it made me realize that these cities were more livable and breathable than the rural areas in Louisiana that I grew up in. This is why my calling is in planning and landscape architecture. I completed my final capstone project integrating a transit oriented development with a bikeway and after tons of research, I found it unexpected that there were a few firms, including Alta, that “specialize” in this small but growing and very important aspect of planning and design. At this point, on top of my relentless pursuit to mountain bike the best single-track around, I told myself that working at a firm like Alta would be my “dream job.”

Hagen Hammons joined Alta Planning + Design in 2006. He has experience in a wide variety of projects in California, Oregon and Washington. Hagen brings strong skills in concept design, photo simulations, construction management and documentation, and computer presentation renderings. He has deep interests in non-motorized connectivity and is an active member of the International Mountain Biking Association and American Society of Landscape Architects.

Recent Projects

  • Vancouver Bikeway Signage, Vancouver (WA)
The city of Vancouver, Washington has hired Alta to recommend the placement and design of its bikeway signage system. Hagen has managed the project, written the initial document, provided presentation graphics for the project and performed site field work throughout the city for suggested sign placements.
  • Vancouver Trails Signage, Vancouver (WA)
For the numerous off street bike paths and trails located in Vancouver, WA, Hagen has located appropriate signage on the trails, directed users from on street bikeways to the trails and suggested infrastructural improvements. He has managed the project, performed field work, and has written and designed the document to be presented before the City of Vancouver’s Parks and Recreation Dept.
  • Fanno Creek Trail, Beaverton (OR)
This segment of trail will nearly connect the currently segmented Fanno Creek Trail. The existing conditions of the creek in this area will require a significant length of boardwalk through the existing wetlands and floodplain. Hagen is assisting with the design and assembly of the construction drawing set, looking at best alignments, permitting documents and exhibits and synthesis of design elements with subcontractors of other disciplines. Construction of this trail is scheduled to begin in late Summer 2007.
  • Chelatchie Prairie Rail with Trail (WA)
This is a proposed rail with trail stretching from Vancouver (WA), 33 miles towards Mt. St. Helens. When completed, this trail will be the recreational jewel of all of Clark County (WA). Hagen has been a vital part of the team analyzing potential alignments through field work and mapping techniques, documenting opportunities and constraints, public workshops/involvement and providing graphic support for the final products.
  • Lake Oswego Trolley Line Trail, Lake Oswego (OR)
For this proposed convergence of an historic trolley line to a bike path, Hagen has designed and conceived various alignments varying from ongrade, graded, cantilevered and bridge/ramp structures to find the best and most feasible connections in very demanding terrain. Once completed, this trail would offer a separated bike path connecting Portland’s Eastbank Esplanade to the City of Lake Oswego.
