I’ve always been an avid outdoorsman, hiker, biker, runner, and really anything that involved not sitting still. Growing up in a small town in South Carolina, I rarely found the necessity for being indoors or stuck in a car as everything I needed (food, religion, and family) was only a 3-minute bike ride away. The real struggle came when it was time to select a career path that could intertwine the gears, spokes, crisp mountain air, and love of the outdoors. Selecting Landscape Architecture as a college major was pure luck but traveling abroad in Turkey and being a part of livable communities is what started to put the pieces of the puzzle together.
Fast forward a few years after graduating from Clemson University (great choice by the way). I sit wondering what my project load would look like over the fall and winter; presented with the idea of managing implementation of a rail to trail conversation, I accept. Almost fully aware of the lifelong impacts this project would bring, I immediately buy a brand new bike and I haven’t looked back.
I’ve moved back to that small town. I still ride my bike to the grocery store, church, and my parent’s house just like I did 25 years prior. My wife, Ashley, and I are instilling the same sense of community pride within our children, Lane and Gracie.
