Programs & Training

Alta believes that planning and implementing excellent infrastructure is only the first step to increasing walking and bicycling. Programs encouraging and educating people about how and why to give bicycling and walking a try are equally important, and can be a cost-effective complement to infrastructure investments. Alta staff are experts on national and international trends and best practices in:

  • Safe Routes to School (A "Five E's" approach integrating Education, Encouragement, Engineering, Enforcement, and Evaluation)
  • Adult and youth education
  • Promotion and media campaigns (Share the Path, pedestrian safety campaigns, bicycle ambassador programs, "Lights On" efforts, etc.)
  • Reaching special target audiences (seniors, women, new residents, tourists)
  • Individualized Social Marketing (a proven method to reduce drive-alone trips by 10% in a target area)
  • Workplace walking and bicycling programs
  • Training and curriculum development (including professional education, TDM trainings, police education, etc.)
  • Bikesharing programs and bike stations

Alta's program team can plan, prioritize, and implement programs to fit your community's needs and resources. We have written more than $50 million in successful grant applications. We are passionate about the programs as the key to unlock the potential of bicycling and walking in communities everywhere.

Featured Projects

Bozeman MT Safe Routes to School
In 2007 Bozeman, Montana had an open enrollment system for its elementary schools that resulted in parents driving their children all over town significantly affecting morning road congestion and perpetuating low levels of walking and bicycling by students. Alta's planning effort included a community workshop and walking audits for each of the schools and helped provide the public support that convinced the school board to vote for a return to neighborhood schools in March of 2008.
