Programs & Training

Besides individual projects, we’re also involved with a variety of structured programs and training efforts that have wide-ranging impact on the worlds of transportation and recreation.

Our Safe Routes to School (SR2S) programs encourage kids to bike and walk to school. Our Travel Encouragement Programs bring an innovative marketing concept that gives residents one-on-one exposure to the variety of transportation modes available to them, through classes, guided walks and rides, events, maps, and brochures.

In addition, we offer training and public-involvement activities, including trail, bikeway and walkway design workshops and charettes as well as facilitation, and continuing education classes for professionals, advocates and others. We have written more than $50 million in successful grant applications.

Featured Projects

Bozeman MT Safe Routes to School
In 2007 Bozeman, Montana had an open enrollment system for its elementary schools that resulted in parents driving their children all over town significantly affecting morning road congestion and perpetuating low levels of walking and bicycling by students. Alta's planning effort included a community workshop and walking audits for each of the schools and helped provide the public support that convinced the school board to vote for a return to neighborhood schools in March of 2008.
