This project will further the development of Virginia’s Beaches to Bluegrass statewide trail that will connect the Cumberland Gap to the Atlantic Ocean. From Virginia Beach, this trail will traverse over 500 miles of southern Virginia’s coastal plain, piedmont, and rugged mountain regions.

Partnered with HNTB Corporation, Alta worked for the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation (VDCR) in furthering the development of Virginia’s Beaches to Bluegrass cross-state trail that will connect the Cumberland Gap to the Atlantic Ocean. From Virginia Beach, this trail will traverse over 500 miles of southern Virginia’s coastal plain, piedmont, and rugged mountain regions. Alta documented existing and developing trail networks and connection opportunities where gaps between trail systems exist. This included shadowing remnants of abandoned railroad lines, exploring mountain ridge-tops, and following riverine corridors.

Alta also worked with many jurisdictions and stakeholders in defining a set of recommendations for the statewide trail that involved a diversity of trail types and user groups. Potential connections between existing and developing trail systems were identified throughout the southern part of the state. The Beaches to Bluegrass Trail showcases geographical variation and culture, allowing residents and visitors alike to uncover new opportunities by trail across southern Virginia.
