Best practices in bicycle and pedestrian facility design guidelines are constantly being advanced by many U.S. cities.

Alta combines guidance found in more traditional resources – such as FHWA, MUTCD, NACTO, and AASHTO – with local standards and information from groups such as TRB, ITE, and academic researchers to create a single visually-rich document that can be used as a resource to lead the design of bicycle and pedestrian facilities. Our guidelines include critical dimensions and considerations, high quality graphics and renderings, and references for more detailed design guidance from external sources. This unique format allows project designers, elected officials, and members of the public to grasp the function and benefits of each treatment, while providing a conduit to more detailed design guidance to be used for subsequent project implementation.
