The region around Albemarle contains diverse development patterns, varying from rural landscapes and historic towns to the developed, tourism-focused Outer Banks. Alta prepared a regional bicycle plan that recommends context-sensitive infrastructure projects, policy changes, and programs, as well as funding ideas appropriate for these different environments.
A strategic fieldwork effort was launched to cover the multi-county region documenting bicycling conditions from rural landscapes and historic towns to transient tourist destinations in the Outer Banks. Before recommendations were formulated, a public involvement effort was launched to gather input from a cross section of residents and visitors. Methods for garnering input included “piggy-back” events, a project website, online input map, Facebook page, and public relations strategies. Final plan recommendations are context-sensitive infrastructure projects, policy changes, programming initiatives, and funding ideas appropriate for multiple on- and off-road conditions.
