Chautauqua County is known for its rural charm, agriculture, and abundance of natural amenities. With over 4,300 horses in the county and many active bridle clubs and corrals, opportunities abound to create a vibrant equestrian-centered economy.

The Chautauqua County Department of Planning and Economic Development and County of Chautauqua Industrial Development Agency saw an opportunity to create an equestrian trail network that would act as a catalyst to increase economic activity and job growth within the region. Alta led the feasibility study for this Equestrian Trails Plan. Some of the key issues included developing an interconnected network of trails to connect staging areas, lodging, planned equestrian communities, dining, shopping and other services encouraging tourism. The Chautauqua County equestrian trail system was designed to retain and enhance the rural character of the region. Alta conducted public workshops and field reviews to identify opportunities, challenges, and concerns and to inventory existing trail conditions. The final product was a high-quality illustrative plan exhibit with supporting text, graphics and trail maps that identified important trail features and access points.
