In 2015, the City of Santa Ana developed a multi-faceted bicycle safety marketing and education campaign in the Santa Ana.
The California Office of Traffic Safety provided grant funds for the project, in large part due to the City’s documented history of bicyclist- and pedestrian-involved collisions. The final marketing campaign message asks residents and visitors to “Travel Safe, Share the Space” (in both English and Spanish). The message was distributed via bus stop shelters at 12 locations, banners on 36 street light poles, 500 printed brochures, and a new page hosted on the City’s official website. The project team also conducted in-school traffic safety assemblies at 19 local elementary schools, led four citywide bicycle safety rodeos, and gave away 1,000 free bicycle helmets to Santa Ana youth. Finally, the project included a seminar to train 12 new League Certified Cycling Instructors (LCIs) who will help the City sustain the project’s momentum.
Throughout the project, the project team collaborated with local Active Streets advocates, the Police Department, Santa Ana Unified School District, and many other community partners to create a campaign message and theme that reflects the unique culture and needs of Santa Ana. Native Spanish speakers translated all campaign materials into that language, and interpreters were available at bicycle rodeos to speak with parents during the activities.
